Sharp Minds is a project for young people aged 11 years old to 16 years old experiencing mental health needs; such as anxiety, or depression, and may be socially isolated as a result. We aim to help our young people manage and alleviate these challenges they face through group work and 1:1 work.
Over recent years we have seen an increase in the number of young people experiencing mental health problems, these may include anxiety, low self-esteem, social isolation, or depression. The issues young people are facing are varied; family breakdown, bereavement, bullying, confusion over their sexual identity, or struggling with friendships, etc. We aim to help by providing young people with developing healthy coping strategies, a space in which they can be themselves whatever that may look like, and a place for them to make friends.
At Sharp Minds we use a youth work approach to provide a safe space for young people to have fun, as well as enabling them to be themselves; all without restrictions they may have previously faced. In order to do this, we use various activities, some of which include art, games, and cooking. By doing group activities we believe that the young people will feel more able to open up about their feelings, whether to another peer or a youth worker. This sort of environment enables our youth workers to aid the young people in becoming more resilient and developing healthy coping strategies.
There is a potential for us to offer emotional management courses, CBT and mentoring all of which are needs and capacity based. These can only be accessed by those attending the groups. We can also advocate for the young person in school as we aim to support young people holistically for their emotional welfare; again this support is needs and capacity based.
