A conversation was had with one of our young people at a youth club – after being asked what she would like to do with her life she answered that she’d like to be a fire-fighter, but she knew she couldn’t do that because she was black and a girl….
A few weeks later we had arranged a trip to the local fire station on a day where the crew were all women, for this young lady to be shown around/ try on the gear/ see the processes and have lunch with the crew. She was even able to use the hose and witness a real emergency and see the fire crew leap into action.
At the end of the day, as we were leaving the station, she said ‘I definitely want to be a fire fighter now.’
